Bugoma Forest Reserve is Bunyoro's own great rainforest — a dense, biodiverse block of natural forest between Hoima and Lake Albert, and home to one of Uganda's most significant chimpanzee populations outside the country's national parks. It is a quieter, more community-rooted alternative to the busier primate-trekking destinations further south.
Bunyoro's Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Bugoma holds an estimated several hundred chimpanzees alongside other primates, forest birds, and butterflies, making it an important site for both conservation and low-impact tourism. In recent years the forest has also become a rallying point for community and conservation groups working to protect it from encroachment by commercial agriculture — a visit here supports that effort directly.
What to See & Do
Guided nature walks and chimp tracking lead visitors through the forest interior with local guides trained in the reserve's trails and wildlife. Because Bugoma sees far fewer visitors than Uganda's national parks, the experience feels more intimate and unhurried, with a strong emphasis on the surrounding Bunyoro communities who manage access to the forest.
Best Time to Visit
The dry seasons (December-February and June-August) make forest trails easier to walk. Because this is a community-guided reserve rather than a national park, it is best to arrange a visit in advance through a local operator.
Getting There
Bugoma lies roughly 45km south of Hoima town, making it an easy addition to a Bunyoro heritage circuit that includes Mparo Tombs, with onward road access toward Lake Albert and Murchison Falls.
