South of Fort Portal, Kibale Forest National Park protects one of Uganda's last expanses of tropical rainforest and has earned its reputation as the primate capital of Africa. Thirteen primate species live within its canopy, but it is the park's habituated chimpanzee communities that draw travellers from across the world.
Tooro's Primate Capital
Kibale holds one of the highest primate densities on the continent — chimpanzees, L'Hoest's and red colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and more, alongside forest elephants and over 370 recorded bird species. The forest's scale and biodiversity make it a standout stop on any Tooro itinerary, distinct in character from the savannah parks further north.
What to See & Do
Chimpanzee trekking is the headline activity, with morning and afternoon sessions tracking habituated troops through the forest interior — sightings typically last close to an hour once the group is located. The more immersive Chimpanzee Habituation Experience lets researchers and visitors spend a full morning with a community as it wakes and moves through its territory. Just outside the park, the community-run Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary offers a gentler guided walk through papyrus swamp, rich in birdlife and eight further primate species.
Best Time to Visit
Chimp trekking runs year-round, but the dry seasons (December-February, June-August) offer easier forest walking. Chimpanzees are present regardless of season, since trekking follows habituated groups rather than migratory patterns.
Getting There
Kibale is about 35km south of Fort Portal, roughly 5-6 hours from Kampala by road. It combines naturally with Tooro Royal Palace and Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Caves for a full western Uganda circuit.
