Murchison Falls National Park

Bunyoro's Roaring Wonder

Uganda's largest national park takes its name from the point where the entire Victoria Nile is squeezed through a gorge barely 7 metres wide before thundering 43 metres down into the Devil's Cauldron below. Murchison Falls is Bunyoro's roaring wonder — a park of savannah, riverine forest, and one of Africa's great rivers, packed into a single unforgettable landscape.

Bunyoro's Roaring Wonder

The falls themselves are the park's signature moment, viewable both from the "Top of the Falls" lookout, where you can feel the spray and hear the deafening roar up close, and from the water on a boat cruise looking up at the gorge. Beyond the falls, the park spans savannah plains north of the river and dense forest to the south, giving it one of the most varied ecosystems in Uganda.

What to See & Do

Game drives through the northern savannah bring sightings of elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions, and Uganda kob in large numbers. The Nile boat cruise to the base of the falls is the park's other must-do, passing pods of hippos, basking crocodiles, and — for the fortunate — the elusive shoebill stork along the delta's papyrus edges. Sport fishing for Nile perch and chimpanzee tracking in nearby Budongo Forest round out a fuller itinerary.

Best Time to Visit

The dry months (December-February and June-September) offer the easiest game viewing, with wildlife concentrated near water sources and roads more passable. Birding is strongest just after the rains, from March and October, when migratory species are present.

Getting There

Murchison Falls is roughly a 4-5 hour drive from Kampala via Masindi, or a scenic 1-hour scheduled flight into the park's airstrips. It pairs naturally with Bunyoro heritage sites like Mparo Tombs and Bugoma Forest on a wider Bunyoro-Tooro itinerary.
