Perched on a hill overlooking Fort Portal town, Karuzika Palace is the beating heart of the Tooro Kingdom and home to Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, once the world's youngest reigning monarch. This is not a ruin behind a rope — it is a living royal residence, and a visit here is a rare chance to stand at the centre of a monarchy that still shapes daily life across the Rwenzori sub-region.
A Living Seat of Royalty
Karuzika was rebuilt in its current form and officially opened in 2012, replacing an earlier palace destroyed under Idi Amin's regime. Its grounds combine modern architecture with deep royal symbolism, and its elevated position gives it commanding views over Fort Portal, one of Uganda's cleanest and most scenic towns. The palace remains the official seat of the Omukama and hosts coronation anniversaries, royal ceremonies, and state functions throughout the year.
What to See & Do
Guided visits take you through the palace grounds with a storyteller who walks you through the Tooro royal lineage, the kingdom's re-establishment in 1993, and the cultural protocols that still govern royal life today. From the palace hill, you get one of the best panoramic views in Fort Portal — rolling tea estates in the foreground and the snow-capped Rwenzori range on the horizon on a clear day. Many visitors pair the palace with a short walk through Fort Portal's town centre and its colonial-era architecture.
Best Time to Visit
The palace can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons (December to February and June to August) offer the clearest views of the Rwenzoris and the most comfortable walking conditions around the grounds. Early morning visits tend to be quieter and cooler.
Getting There
Karuzika sits about 2km from Fort Portal town centre, roughly a 5-6 hour drive from Kampala via Mubende, or a short connecting flight/transfer if arriving through western Uganda's regional airstrips. It is easily combined with visits to Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Caves and Kibale Forest, both a short drive away.
